Medical

A message from The British Performing Arts Medicine Trust

All working musicians rely upon their limbs, their health, their stamina to earn their living and these are things taken too readily for granted. Talent will not be enough if you are in too much pain, or if your hands won’t do what you ask them to do.

A word of warning, however, about the papers which will appear on this page! Just because your symptoms sound like those you are reading about, don’t jump to conclusions! Many a musician has diagnosed himself with dystonia when it is nothing of the kind. We all can believe we have double pneumonia when we have a bad cold if we read a medical dictionary.

The British Performing Arts Medicine Trust, which is partially funded by the Musicians Union has experience diagnosing and treating musicians. Whether your injury or illness is physical, psychological or emotional you may need help. Whether your injury or illness is caused by bad luck, accident, or indeed your own abusive lifestyle, you need to contact people with medical expertise - both conventional and complementary - who can help you tap into the right source of help.

Two pieces of advice - you may think conflicting advice - but true nonetheless:

  • Don’t neglect a pain that is causing you problems in case it is something which ought to be sorted out. Many a performer has wished they had not heard the immortal words "no pain, no gain" when they have to retire early;

  • Don’t believe that every little niggle is career threatening , it won’t be, but better safe than sorry.
