Dr.A.B.M.(Boni) Rietveld was born in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) in 1952. He started his musical training at the age of 5.
After secondary school he studied both medicine and music (trumpet and harp). In 1976 he graduated as B.A.(mus.) trumpet with Theo Laanen at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague. In 1978 he graduated as M.D. at the University of Leiden.
During his specialization in orthopaedic surgery at Leiden University Medical Centre he had extensive training in dance-orthopaedics with William G.Hamilton, M.D. in New York. Since 1987 he is certified as an orthopaedic surgeon.
He is a board member of the International Association for Dance-Medicine and Science (IADMS) and of the Dutch Dance Medicine Foundation (SGD) and of the Dutch Musicians’ Medicine Foundation (SGM). He is a member of the International Advisory Panel of the journal Medical Problems of Performing Artists (MPPA) and an editorial board member of the Journal for Dance-Medicine and Science (JDMS). He is a life member of BAPAM, since he completed the 1992 London marathon as their sponsor.
On April 1st, 1993 he established the first Dutch Medical Centre for Dancers and Musicians in The Hague. He devotes all his time as an orthopaedic surgeon to the healthcare for dancers and musicians, both as a clinician and in the organisational field. Recently he initiated the Netherlands Performing Arts-Medicine Association.
Besides his orthopaedic work he is the medical advisor for Avéro Achmea, a large Dutch healthcare insurance company. He performs and records regularly as a trumpeter, both in classical music and in old style jazz. Since 1992 he is addicted to long distance running. (P.R. marathon: 3:11:57). He is married and has two children.
